Heritage
Hipparcos leverages the long heritage of EICAS Automazione in Autonomous Attitude Determination Systems from star measurement. EICAS was set up in 1984 by professors of Politecnico di Torino and industrial researchers, led by Prof. Francesco Donati.
The team developed deep know-how in the AADS sector starting from the HIPPARCOS Mission, then pursuing long cooperations with ESA, ASI and major industry players.

EICAS cooperated with Alenia Spazio and Officine Galileo on autonomous gyroless attitude determination by star measurement, experimented on the SAC-C satellite.
EICAS designed a new multi-camera system for spacecraft attitude determination within ESA contracts.
EICAS demonstrated the feasibility of the ARGO solution with a multicamera prototype, auto-calibration and night sky tests.
ARGO was developed up to TRL9 and launched in orbit on 24 January 2021, with a wide demonstration campaign from May 2021 to July 2022.
